In a way, it's to keep the boredom away. Joshua didn't really have a goal for his life after he finished university. All he knew was that he didn't want to be a normal, contributing member of society, because society has expectations and unspoken rules, and he doesn't like most of them. But Joshua is pretty terrible at giving direction in his life when he doesn't have a goal, and prior to seeing the Winding Way's plays and meeting its crew, Joshua had a pretty jaded outlook to life. He got pretty frustrated with it. The bad outweighed the good. Life's a giant bore. That kind of thing.

But somewhere along the way, he realised that fuck it, he can't change anything by bitching about it to Mr. H and Isshin. People sit too much in their comfort zone, so Joshua wanted to jarr them, throw them off their horse, so to speak. But damn he finds doing that fun as well. As much as he was B| about people, he can't deny that people are interesting. And after seeing the various reactions to his dickery, is actually cool with the concept that maybe he likes people. They have a lot of potential, and while a lot of people will follow his predefined concepts of how people tend to act, there's always the ones who react in a different way from what he expects, that that always excites him. He likes people in that he can pick apart people's brains all he likes, but sometimes they'll still surprise him.

(In short, people are interesting, Joshua sees being a dick as the perfect way of being abrasive. Being a network troll is just a function of said dickery)
