okay so I was going to be productive and work on my RE252 assignment various character/topical essays, but instead I spent the majority of that time poking through pixiv and finding incredible amounts of adorable MOTHER/SSBB art. Sometimes I would also find art that just had me kind of gaping in awe. I WILL ALWAYS BE IN AWE OF PEOPLE WHO CAN DO PICTURES LIKE THIS, HOLY CRAP. I AM DROWNING IN MY INFERIORITY
Pixiv, however, also had Kirby/Ike. And not in the cute adorable way that you usually get with srs looking characters juxtaposed with blobs with eyes. Please give me the brain bleach.

SO! As some of you guys already know, I'm generally underlevel in (turn-based) JRPGs when I play them. Some of you guys may also know that I'm also completely fucking terrible at platformers (Donkey Kong Country 2 being the one and only exception to this) and shit at fighting games, for a similar reason.
Now, the thing is, most games for me aren't interesting to me unless they hit the gaming sweet spot, where the game is difficult, but not too difficult. The sweetest is just at the border of difficult and too difficult, and those are the times I get extremely 8DDD about a game ! And it kind of gradually sours as I slide along the easy scale.
THIS IS ACTUALLY SOMETHING PRETTY OBVIOUS it's just that I never really explicitly noticed this before now. It does explain why I'm generally so ANTI-GRINDING for turn-based JRPGs (aside from laziness and a dislike of grinding in general, since that tends to fall under 'easy' which makes the game uninteresting!) since I pretty much grew up on Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, all of which are games that aren't particularly challenging battles wise, though the last two are on the higher end of that 'easy difficulty' challenge rating. But see, if I'm not underlevel for games, generally the gameplay gets punted into 'easy difficulty', which tends to mean my interest in the game goes downhill. Being underlevel means I'm imposing an extra amount of difficulty on myself, which brings me closer to the difficulty sweet spot ! I tend to say that I BARELY SCRAPE THROUGH a lot of my bossfights, especially with the more recent games I've been playing (Persona 3&4, MOTHER series), and it's totally true. AND THAT IS VERY EXCITING TO ME. Knowing that I clawed my way to victory in the face of almost certain defeat IS VERY EXHILARATING.
Now, this is where I get to talk about fighting games and platformers. I AM GENERALLY PRETTY SHOCKING AT THEM. Platformers go under TOO DIFFICULT because of the jumping. I have a hard time telling the distances and where I'm going to land. This is especially apparently when I compare say, Super Mario World with Donkey Kong Country 2, the latter of which I AM VERY EXCELLENT AT. I think my biggest issue is that with every other platformer I've played, the jumping doesn't feel rhythmic like it does with DKC2. Maybe it has something to do with the acceleration in DKC2, and how it's very easy to see the different points in the lead-up AND the jump. Because, come to think of it, I was pretty bad at jumping with the animal buddies, who have the same kind of jump pattern as other platformers.
Fighting games also go under TOO DIFFICULT, primarily because HOLY FUCK WHY DO I HAVE TO ENTER 9 DIFFERENT BUTTONS IN UNDER A SECOND TO PULL OFF ONE MOVE. I can barely remember locker combinations, and those are like, 3 numbers long, let alone sequences of various button presses. And that's just the special moves. I'm ridiculously predictable in fighting games, mostly because I forget there are other tactics and don't play enough to really learn how to play better hahaha. And I don't have the co-ordination to be precice enough to pull of special attacks, and granted that's something that you gain after playing fighting games more, it's very frustrating for me, because I don't see any evidence of improvement within a short amount of time. I'll start off being unable to pull off a certain attack, and 30 minutes later, I still won't be able to pull it off.
LOGICALLY, Super Smash Bros should fall under the TOO DIFFICULT category, because it's combining two genres I'm epically bad at. Fighting game? Check (albeit one withOUT all those key combinations that other fighting games have) Jumping being an important tool to survival? Check. Incredible amounts of dexterity and co ordination required? Check! (my definition of dexterity and co ordination may differ from yours; I find using a joystick to make myself face in the appropriate direction INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT. I'm only good with a D-pad, and prefer to use a combination of D-pad and joystick) REALLY it has all the qualities of a game I should get frustrated with very quickly.
But despite the fact I am completely shit at SSB, I can actually see myself improving! (I. I still accidentally shoot myself off edges and ocassionally trap myself under platforms UNPROVOKED and can't seem to differentiate between tilts and smashes. BUT AT LEAST I CAN ROLL AND GRAB THE CPU NOW) And it's very encouraging ! I know playing SSB isn't the same as playing SSBB, and the fact that I'm using a keyboard for SSB makes a huge difference (in some ways I'm more co ordinated with the keyboard e.g. I won't jump when I mean to run forward! But in others ways, I'm less so, because my hands are really stiff, which sometimes makes it hard for me to let go of keys) but! I'm pretty sure that SSBB will keep me entertained for a long time, even on single player. I have a lot of fail to unlearn myself out of, after all.
IN SHORT: TEN IS PROBABLY GETTING BRAWL.
Also.
me: MAN, WHY DOES IT KEEP ON STOPPING AND STARTING. Is it because I'm jamming it in too hard?
mum: Why do you have to be so rough? A girl's supposed to be ~*gentle*~
NO CONTEXT FOR YOU.
