I've had the recent, inexplicable urge to play the Mother series (again, for two of them). This may be fueled from listening to Mother 3 music. Yes, that means starting from the first one. And if you know how much level grinding there is in Mother, and now much I hate level grinding, you'll know how much my need to play it right now is. I pretty much want to play them all on my DS, though, since travel time is my gaming time these days.

However, I has been foiled by my inability to get it working on my DS. I'm willing to at least play Mother and Earthbound on my PC, since on the DS, the resolution will be kind of terrible, I think. But I really want to get Mother 3 working on my DS. I'm prooobably going to poke around some more and see if there's a program to convert .gba files to .nds, since given my cart, the usual option of just putting it in isn't available to me.

Edit: Lulz looks like I won't be able to play Mother on my DS, because the only emulator that works? Can't save. ... Yeahhhhhh.
Edit2: FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF nearly died on the 3rd random battle, and I was on full health ;;

Also, please tell me it's a bad idea to make more Mockingbird icons from the new RAWs + re-iconning my old ones now that I have my hands on better quality RAWs for the previous chapters ;; I have this urge to fill this account with Toto icons, but I stop myself because that's what [livejournal.com profile] to_kill_a is for |||OTL. Whoops, I just made more Mockingbird icons.

His latest, what, 3 pages, in Chapter 26 only reinforces my belief that when I play him, he'll be a lot like playing canon!Joshua if Joshua could control his blood to kill people. At least on a surface level. They're both stalkers and both willing to toy with the emotions of some hapless boy to further their own agendas, anyway. Of course, this brain dump pretty much needs a standard, everything I say here about Toto can pretty much get Jossed when scanlations/translations come out + more manga chapters are released. It's a pain since I like to meta and essay when everything's (mostly) already set in stone, but what can I do?

The biggest thing I can't really touch right now is how he messes with Ganta, because lol need a translation for that. But I can touch on things I can gather from the art, and one of the biggest things I've noticed is confidence. He just seems to do what he wants, when he wants to, and. ahhhh goddammit, I'm too lazy to write this up when I wrote a mental essay on this a couple of weeks earlier. In short, while Toto seems to be pretty damn strong in the context of the DMW world, in another context (e.g. a panfandom RP) and in other types of fights, I don't think he'll be as much of a godmoder. Even in the DMW context, a big part of that 'godmoder' feeling seems to come from the confidence he carries himself with (and even then, Shiro as the Wretched Egg is a bigger godmoder than him so idk). blah blah blah god what sort of essay is this if I'm too lazy to write it.

Notable is the fact that Toto seems to have gotten out completely unscathed from Chapter 25, while all the other Deadmen (with the exception of Azami?? IDK, she seemed perfectly fine physically) ended up with some pretty terrible damage (though you'd kind of expect them to be used to it given the Carnival Corpse?). And to me, it sort of looked like he was in the line of Ganta's fire, so IDKKK he's like a cockroach, I guess. Still a freakin' stalker, though. From what I can tell of Chapter 26, it looks like he suggested Ganta go check up on the other Deadmen (though I wouldn't be surprised if Toto knew exactly what kind of reception Ganta would get). And seems completely unsurprised when he finds Ganta in his room trashed. I mean. Seriously the face he makes at it is so damn insincere I want to punch it. It pretty much says "Aww poor baby, don't feel bad", except pretend it's said really, really condescendingly. And the face he makes with the "Aha ☆" is just so. MY WORK HERE IS DONE, HEH.

And. what the heck would the english equivalent of "arere ☆" anyway :|

Also, it still bugs me that Toto can make blades appear anywhere that's bleeding, except (aside from his hand) he's not really bleeding in Chapter 25. It's possible that he cuts himself before going into battle but damn that's a lot of places to be cutting yourself, and we're not shown any kind of cutting mechanism for him (we see it for Senji, Ganta, Minatsuki, net!guy, but we don't for anyone else IIRC). His hand is shown to be bleeding before he goes for the overkill, but even then, that's like a finger or two, not all the fingers and his palm. And how does pre-cutting apply with the Hibana fight? Unless he was expecting to be found (I can't tell if he was waiting for her, or just felt like chilling in the middle of the corridor) but hrhghghg. I mean, old man Hitara's blood power seems to be making FIRE from his blood. Like, what. I wouldn't be surprised if the manga-kas went with the Rule of Cool rather than thinking it through. I don't blame them; it is stupid sexy carnage, after all. And let's not forget Toto's disappearing collar. I have nfi if that's done on purpose.

However, it kind of leaves me kind of flailing internally a bit should I ever have to RP Toto actually fighting with his blood ability. Is his body fragile enough that he doesn't actually need to cut himself? Since it's shown that his body tears itself apart as he fights, but lol no blood from the tears. Yet, the no blood in his tears could simply be a drawing convention, because it's cooler, just like how there can be blood spraying everwhere and everyone's clothing is surprisingly clean given everything. Or maybe he does cut himself, but I don't know what mechanism he uses ! Which will be a pain, so I have no idea whether in apps I should be stating that he needs to be bleeding to use his abilities or not, though I'm favouring yes even though Rule of Cool makes me want to say no. I mean, from a completely logical standpoint, cutting yourself should scab or scar but it's not shown, and ripping your thumb with your teeth is pretty terrible :| I really should just. go with the RULE OF COOL, because that was why I'm reading DMW in the first place SO.

What's most frustrating, however, is that it seems 95% of Toto's interactions are going to be with either Ganta or Shiro hrhghrhg it's going to be like trying to figure out Joshua's characterisation again, where interactions are incredibly limited, and highly affected by the work's context.

I'm also betting that Azami dies within 3-5 chapters of chapter 27.

I love how on-the-spot you are with Toto's personality ♥ I read your stuff and I'm like *nod, nod, nod* because I totally `agree. And it makes sense.

As for the cutting thing, that bothered me, too, especially in regards to Hibana's death. He looked over his shoulder and just slaughtered her. It was so instant. I think you're really onto something with the fragility of his body. Even though it's never been shown bleeding, just like... raw meat where it tears. wdhfkdsf dsfdskjdf /SHUDDERS LMFAO

God, I love Hitara's power. The fire suits him so, so well in this way I can't quite describe I'm just really gay for Hitara jdsljksdfds

I agree that Azami's done for. Her arc has just been too fucking tragic to let her live through it. And, really? It goes along with the whole 'Touch your friends, and they all die' theme that's been following Ganta throughout the series.

Aww thanks ♥ Granted, there isn't all that much to go off fro him hahaha. The manga could easily turn around and Joss a lot of my theories, though from the way the story's progressed so far, I don't thinkI'll get Jossed too badly.

RE: Hibana's slaughter, I'm willing to believe the ensuing scuffle was cut out to emphasis Toto's strength, given that the little girl the other Deadmen had issues hurting was easily killed by Mockingbird. I mean, yeah, I'm pretty sure it was a fast fight anyway (given that he generally one-shotted the guys in Chapter 25), but the fact the actual fighting was cut out really cements the WOW THIS GUY IS SUPER STRONG impression, rather than leaving his "ridiculously strong" fighting abilities as an informed ability. It really feels like all the times Toto fights, the mangakas are favouring using the scenes as a story-telling device rather than thinking about the 'rules' they've previously established.

RE: fragility, seeing his hand tear off like that made me think, wow that's really cool fff. It seems to be his only apparent fighting weakness, though, because it really seems like he rushes his battles because he rips apart as he fights. Granted, he doesn't seem to be all that bothered by it, just kind of works his way around it. (The enemy can't take advantage of weakness if they're dead, right? ♥ )

Lol Hitara's leather pants and midriff top, though. Old man's design was pretty cool, though, especially his face ffffff.

Yeahhh, it's a real pity, but it'd be (sadly) fitting. Although after her, who will be the next friend to die, I wonder.
