[Mini-ramble?] Sho and maths
Hokay so I was picking through various posts in our beloved LJ webspace, and it seems there is a general consensus that in order to Sho well, you need to be a goddamned genius at maths and know how to perform mathmatical inductions at will.
This is possibly another point I will disagree with fandom on.
I can totes see why fandom likes to make Sho a mathmatical genius, though. It's stated in canon that the guy's a genius, if a bit of a nutcase. Sho appears to love maths, judging by his verbal tics (though I'm estimating about a third of the 'maths' terms are actually more physics related, but blah blah maths and physics are related etcetc.). It's not illogical to presume that if Sho loves maths, he's gotta be good at it. At least, for me it isn't, since in my experience, the things I enjoy tend to be the things I'm 'good' at.
I personally dig Sho players who can do the calculus, because it gives me a small amount of glee being able to understand it perfectly ! But I don't think needing to know calculus level maths is a requirement to being able to play a good Sho. If you go off what's presented in canon, Sho doesn't use anything more complex than basic pre-calc algebra. Most of what he says is completely understandable by lower-high school students (unless my standards are just high, but I think not?), and possibly the only thing you wouldn't understand in his little spiels is 'yoctogram' (which you can understand from context) and 'zetta', because it's not exactly a word you hear tossed around in everyday conversation often.
Hell, maybe the reason Sho uses all the math terms is because he's bitter he died before he got to take a Calculus class.
Sho's got quite a lot of hot air, a lot of ego, and he kind of reminds me of myself when I was in primary school. Using big words that the other kids don't understand in order to make myself feel like I'm smarter and more knowledgeable than them. Of course, the people who knew what I'm talking about knew I was full of shit. And I think, in a way, that's what Sho does with the maths/physics, trying to boost his ego.
All I remember seeing in the Sho thread in the rp advice meme (the older ones) was MATHS MATHS MATHS. Maybe the maths is the most noticeable thing, but aughhh Sho is not made of maths! Although... he did come back to life through numbers... so that's a bit debatable, in hindsight.
tl;dr - You don't need to know calculus to be able to play a good Sho, because he doesn't actually use calculus in canon ! (if anything, he uses more physics) And this may or may not be an attempt to convince Jess to app Sho so he can chase Joshua all over Sinnoh

then i was like oh wait. right. that's probably correct and my country is just retarded. :|
and as to the post itself, I've always found that Shos that use math all over the place are impressive... but not necessarily correct. He didn't do that in game, really. At least not to the extent people take it to -- it's like you say, really. He uses big words and simple formulas, but doesn't speak an incomprehensible language of numbers.
BUT IT STILL LOOKS COOL, GOSH DARN IT.

...... I think you just broke my brain ;;
