Okay, so. I LOVE Mother 3.
I also dislike it.
Sob.
When it comes to RPGs (or games in general I guess), I tend to prioritise gameplay over storyline/characters. I guess it's because, well, games are first and foremost, entertainment for me. Because I tend to get bored with most RPG plots, they become low on my priority list when I decide whether I like a game or not, since I can pretty much 'skip' the plot by mashing the confirm button or something 8| Hence! I can play RPGs with absolute shit plot and still find them enjoyable because of their battle system. See: Grandia 2. I will actually complete RPGs that have a fun battle system !
While on the flip-side, I can be interested in plot and characters, but be completely and absolutely turned off by their battle system and never finish the damn game. See: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2. If I absolutely loathe the battle system, or feel pretty 'meh' about it (see: all the Final Fantasies I've played), I'll most likely lose interest in the game :|
Mother 3 is probably the ONLY RPG where I can loathe the battles and STILL PUSH ON TO CONTINUE TO THE END.
... well, Mother 3, and Mother 2/Earthbound :| But the reason was. slightly different for Mother 2.
I don't even have a good reason for why I hate battling so much in Mother 3; the battle system is marginally more interesting than most Final Fantasies anyway, mostly because of the rhythm attacks. I just, really, really, hate battles in Mother 3, and to be honest, I would probably enjoy it a lot more if I just 1hit KOed all enemies :|
I've actually been spoiled to the events that happen in Mother 3 aaages ago, but it still doesn't change how much of an impact events still managed to have on me. The little summaries at the end of each chapter kind of make me feel like I'm a kid again, watching cartoons with the "OH WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT? TUNE IN NEXT WEEK!". But for all the... moments of telling, the things that really hit you emotionally, Mother 3 shows it to you and it does't feel like the game is telling you what's happening; it feels like you're experiencing what's happening.
Iii, won't really go into much more detail, but Claus and Lucas ;; The family in general in the beginning of Chapter 1 really made me feel warm and fuzzy inside, especially with the CHAAAAAAAAAARGE at the dragos ♥ (haha I charged at Claus instead |D ). I have no Mother muses, but definitely will write some Mother 3 fic when I finish (and probably replay the early part of chapter 1).
Also, some really retarded Joshua art. I should draw more often so it doesn't happen again :|
