[DMW] tl;dr DMW makes no sense.

Mmmmmmmmm I could listen to the sound of Mockingbird badtouching Crow all day, I MEAN WHAT.

Okay this is going to be a long tl;dr on the Director of DMW and the original Mockingbird. Ideally I'd like to focus on the latter, but unfortunately, since the next DMW chapter is taking longer than I'd like to come out, I should probably think more about the former, just in case it turns out the latter really is unappable. Mostly going off the manga, though I'll probably talk about the anime, too.

Okay so. We know that Toto is the Director's 3rd generation, and Ganta was going to be the 4th. I'm guessing that means Toto was the Director's 3rd body, the first being the original that we saw when he was experimenting on Shiro and the second being the old man who we don't know anything about.

What I find really quite interesting is that his behaviour seems to vary wildy from body to body. In his original body, he was a scientist. He doesn't really give a shit about other peoples' pain and suffering (I guess if he did, he wouldn't have established Deadman Wonderland), and only really starts to show interest when Shiro begins to manifest the blood powers and later, 'love' when she demonstrates the ability to regenerate her body. He expresses wanting to be her, and I am guessing that all of what he did before the earthquake was study her through putting her through all sorts of experiments that I can only really describe as torture.

So then, what about after the earthquake? There's definitely a lot of ??? over the whens and hows of doing the body swapping he did. I don't even know when he thought of such a thing, and how he went about doing it. DMW does seem to leave a lot of things like that as unknown, with not very much information to even draw a educated guess. Anyway, after the earthquake, it seems his focus is more on freeing the Wretched Egg from the Mother Goose system (the nature of which also makes me ??? a lot. Wouldn't her power be free if she left Japan? Or when the power is turned off like in the earlier chapters? Is there a reason he can't just break the damn thing, when the manga has shown most of the characters being able to punch through steel and concrete with ease?), and I'm wondering why he wants to do that? Wouldn't it technically be easier to study her while her power is limited? It kind of seems to me that, like a number of the characters, he has a sadistic streak, especially since he was quite content to trick Tamaki and observe him create all kinds of monstrosities to fight the Wretched Egg. It seemed to be amusing enough for the Director to not take an active role in freeing the Wretched Egg, anyway. We know the Director established the Carnival Corpse, and that purpose was to pick out the strongest Deadman in order to get a body that was suitable to getting close to the Wretched Egg. Which makes me wonder if his goal isn't just to have the same immortal body as Shiro, but to rain destruction and despair on the world alongside the Wretched Egg. Maybe that's his form of 'love'.

Yeah, maybe initially, before the quake, he wanted that same kind of immortal body, but after, probably after being injured or something, he didn't just want that. He also wanted that same kind of power, to 'play' with her, too, on a more personal level than through other scientists. Though I assume he doesn't want to actually die, though I guess if he was to die, he'd be happiest being killed by her, I suppose.

It's a little bit frustrating because his attitude, or at least his manner of expression, seems to change from body to body. We know that the original owner of the body seems to have some influence over his physical mannerisms, but we don't know the extent of that. The Director tells Yosuga that when he took over Toto's body, he overwrote the original Toto's memories, implying there's nothing left of the original Toto. He says something similar to Ganta, too, before he attempts to take him over. I think he mostly... gives the body instructions, but it generally does its own thing. It's only when he actively drives it that it seems to act differently. I guess I think this mostly because I want to think the original owner is still in there, somewhere. I mean, the old man seems to care a lot for Shiro, at least, when she is Shiro. I don't know whether him trying to kill her is actually him, or the Director. If it's the latter, I'm kind of left wondering how he did the body swap to Toto?

Assuming that my theory is correct (watch canon kick me in the face again about this), this means that I have to separate Toto's mannerisms from the Director's. Which is very difficult, because of a few reasons. Firstly, the real Toto has been missing for quite a while now, and there seems to be very few who know him well left. Secondly, a lot of the information we get regarding him is very contradictory (e.g. Tamaki saying he thought Toto died in a Carnival Corpse 2 years ago, then later saying that same Carnival Corpse happened 'last year', among other things). Thirdly, Yosuga also says that 'Toto' is/was acting very differently from the Toto she knows, and I can't tell if that's truly correct, or if it's because of bias since he's family.

Senji knows of Toto, at least, though in the anime it implies that the two are at least somewhat familiar. Toto generally seems to have pretty kiddish mannerisms, but the words he speaks to Senji...well, the thing is that Senji seems to be completely taken aback by the words and Toto's mannerisms and the licking, which makes me wonder if that's not Toto's 'normal' attitude at all. Senji seems to think Toto was being unusually 'friendly', and in the manga, Chaplin seems to think Toto has become nicer (though I don't know if that's just because Chaplin wants to get in his pants, um). Basically it's hard to pin down what the original Toto was like without any solid evidence.

But I do think most of the later chapters are mostly the Director, since he stops being a one hit kill wonder and draws things out further to... I guess... increase the peoples' suffering? (See: the reveal, and his fight against Senji). Notably, he doesn't do this with Yosuga, who he just overwhelmed quickly with a blood hand, but he doesn't even make her bleed at all. Furthers my hopes that the original Toto is still in there.

I'm still not entirely sure what his deal is with Ganta. I'm guessing he's thinking of Ganta in terms of the Wretched Egg, and watching this drama between him and Shiro and laughing all the way.

He does seem to be a little more cautious in the earlier appearances, since he doesn't have any branches of sin to begin with. I'm really wondering why he decided to wait before hijacking Toto's body, rather than grab it straight away, the moment he had hold of him. He only seems to really take an active interest in breaking the Mother Goose system after jumping to Toto's body and the arrival of Ganta. Was he waiting for an opportunity? For Shiro and the Wretched Egg to become less split? It's all very weird to me.

Which brings me to the next problem, where I'm not entirely sure how he'd work in an RP. It's really easy to mimic his voice, but what about his overarching goals and desires? It's really kind of difficult when he's so inconsistent in canon, let alone in a place that's not his. Would he try to make Vatheon his Wonderland, once he realises there are all sorts there, and that no one truly dies? Turn friends and enemies against each other? Try to stir up bloodshed?

In other news, new headcanon. Toto ate Nagi's baby I MEAN WHAT.

Hay~

I could totally listen to the sound of Mockingbird bad touching Crow all day as well >:D

You do have a point-I just finished reading and watching Deadman Wonderland as well (although its really late my time so my thought process might be very dead since I am so tired)

You are right about Mockingbird-I really do hope as well that Toto is still in there, that perhaps he'll come out later. I personally thought that the Mockingbird before (When he was all "Super happy" and licked Crow/whatever was some Toto peeking out however I was wrong)

I have a feeling the it could be one of those things where is ultimate defeat is him not being able to repress the memories of all the bodies he stole and they'd burst out of him all at once leaving him open for a moment for Ganta to bullet him.

I just hope that the author will wrap all the questions everyone has with answers that make sense>
Right now I am just SO glad that Crow didn't get killed. If he died I would of thrown a fit and stopped reading the manga.

That said do you roleplay at all?
I would love to do MockingbirdXCrow LOL
OwlXUndead Priest (I forgot his name)
Or
OC XOC
With little interactions with the other characters just for fun because they are so awesome!

I thought the same thing (that Toto licking Senji might be been partly the influence of original Toto)! In fact, I still kind of hope that it turns out to be the truth, that Toto is still in there and still has some influence.

I kind of think that might happen, except maybe with Yosuga as the catalyst, since she's supposedly Toto's sister. I mean, it kind of feels like a waste introducing a new character so late in the manga and not making use of her connection with Toto, you know?

Hahaha well, even if Crow did get killed, it'd be so close to the end that you might as well finish it. Also, judging from the screenshots from tumblr, it seems the DMW OVA contains Crow, so you might want to check that out, too. I don't know how much of the OVA contains Crow though, since I haven't watched it myself, yet.

I do roleplay, but because I have a ton of other hobbies as well, I unfortunately don't have time to RP a third character (I play in public RP communities). Sorry!

Oh yeah thats true-I never thought about that. Maybe he'll come to because of his sister!
FFFFF yeah but Crow's so awesome! Without him the story will feel empty ;___;
He is one of my favorites along with Yoh and hummingbird and Mockingbird(whenhewasn'tsuchanevilbetch)
An OVA? For the anime? They created an OVA for it already?
Has it come out yet?
Hurray Crow! I hope Yoh and HUmmingbird are in it too!

You have a tumblr too :D I should add you haha.

Yeah, they created an OVA which was released with the special edition 11th volume of the manga! From what I gathered before, it supposedly featured an original character in an original storyline, but that was a while ago. I haven't investigated further. You can see it here (http://www.animecrazy.net/deadman-wonderland-episode-list/).

Yep! But I basically don't use it for anything besides dumping art and following ask blogs, so I tend not to follow people xD It's here (http://ninjaoctopii.tumblr.com/). There's a little bit of DMW art, but my main fandom is TWEWY, so most of my art will be for that.
