Dissidia + FF3

Finally got around to playing a few of the non-plotline characters (aka everyone not the main 10 warriors of Cosmos).

Exdeath: is a tree. WALKS SO SLOW. I did not realise that it also affects how far he can jump in any direction. IT'S LIKE HE'S NOT MOVING AT ALL. EVEN WHEN HE'S FALLING. He seems rather troublesome to play against ranged characters, but I admit I didn't spend all that much time playing him.

Shantotto: I was confused at first on how to use her, as she didn't have any of her status spells while she had a lot of HP attacks. I didn't realise for a while that she needs to chain three HP attacks before she deals damage, and seems to be a monster when she has high bravery. It seems that most of her bravery damage will actually be coming from her HP attacks since they don't seem to deal HP damage until the 3rd attack. I guess she specialises in one-shotting you, ideally. Didn't spend too long on her either, since I had a presentation right after I stopped.

Kuja: Was rather interesting to play as! I'm not used to playing such a floaty character, nor one who can move while attacking. It's actually really interesting and I could get used to it. For me, the hardest part about Kuja is pushing in the right direction so his distance adjusted combos actually land. This isn't a problem for the 'long range' combo, but I keep on missing with the short range because I'm still pushing away-ish with my analog stick. Which means I either miss, or only catch the enemy with one of the holy balls instead of all of them. The change in combos isn't too difficult; I generally estimate the change at about an arm's length distance from Kuja.

Generally the combo only goes off if the initial hits land, but I find that that's not the case with the close ranged combo, which can catch someone off guard. Of course, those who are prepared might block, and a staggering Kuja is very :CCC In an ideal world, Kuja would have 5 aerial slots 8( I tend to play him at close-mid range, so I might drop the longer range moves (hnnghhh Flare Star, you are a pretty good HP move, just saying).

Edit: HNGHHHH Kuja is so versatile! I'm having a really hard time deciding what abilities to put on him because ALL of his bravery attacks are so good! I mean, Ring Holy might not seem so useful since it's easily dodged and can be reflected back at Kuja but it is such a useful tool in messing up the enemy! Especially since Kuja can move during all of his bravery moves, he has so much utility in dodging certain skills while attacking ahsdfhgjhg (I have to stop gliding into Shift Break though). I. OH GOD I DON'T KNOW WHAT BRAVERY SKILLS TO PUT ON HIM AHHH WHY DO THEY ALL HAVE TO BE SO GOOD??

Edit2: OKAY UH. God it's almost quite frustrating working with the controls for Kuja for harder fights. Mostly because ha ha ha I don't know if it's because I just suck or something, but I keep on not doing the attack I want, and I think it's in part because Kuja is movement focused/aerial character. So sometimes I don't meant to be pushing a direction but the game registers it as a push forward or back and I'm like NOOO THAT'S NOT WHAT I WANTED TO DO. On top of that, the camera. OMG. HOW MANY TIMES. I mean, sometimes the camera messes me up on other characters but it really loves to either a) stick to the walls or ceiling or b) focus on Kuja's butt and I'm like NO NO NO I WANT TO SEE WHERE MY OPPONENT IS. AHHHH. or c) GET STUCK INSIDE A WALL. hf;ladhkjjh! Fighting indoors is a pain in the ass, fighting on any stage where the AI railrgrinds in sprials forever is a pain in the ass (Ultimecia's Castle and Planet's core) because most of Kuja's attacks are directly in front of him and GODDAMMIT COME BACK HERE). Battles there last a million times longer because Kuja doesn't do a lot of damage and actually landing a hit takes forever and goddamn my hands get tired playing Kuja okay time to play a different character before I flip something.

Okay so, I actually had a write-up half written on FF3 DS ages back when I was still on the floating continent.

My first thought was ASD;FLHGFJ;AHSDF;H THIS GAME IS RIDICULOUSLY CUTE WHAT. Actually, my first thought on seeing the opening FMV was Luneth and Ingus are totally gay for each other. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE THAT CAME FROM this is not a usual train of thought for me?? But that's just my thoughts on the FMV, it doesn't seem to apply to the actual game, because every party member's interactaction with the others and other NPCs is just made of so much adorable I can feel my teeth rotting. It'd be too much of a waste to ship them with each other when there is so much adorable to be had.

DID I MENTION IT'S RIDICULOUSLY CUTE AHS;LDFH the piano playing and them attempting to play Für Elise and failing miserably at it and everything is better with twirling.

I actually didn't realise that everyone could innately dual wield (which in hindsight, the massive amounts of dual wielding in the FMV makes a lot more sense now), so I got my ass royally handed to be early game until I accidentally equipped Refia with two sets of swords and OH MY GOD EVERYTHING BECAME SO MUCH EASIER. Innate dual wielding is the coolest thing ever and I kind of sort of wish that was the case in later final fantasies. Because come on, dual wielding staves are the best attack thing ever. Although dual wielding shields never stops looking silly.

My main beef with the game (aside from the pseudo random turn order that gets me killed for reasons that are not my fault) is that the gear you can find or buy are often job class inappropriate. I keep finding gear that are for jobs I'm not currently using, and yes, while you expect mages to be squishy, you don't expect to not get any armour for mages until you traverse off the continent, forcing you through several boss fights in what is essentially your beginning gear 8| It's like. OH HI, YOU JUST FOUND TWO MYTHRIL SWORDS! WHAT'S THAT? YOU DON'T HAVE A WARRIOR OR A RED MAGE IN YOUR PARTY? LOL TOO BAD. OH, WHAT'S THIS? AN AXE? FRAID YOU CAN'T USE THAT, EITHER. I found four sets of really good armour... for dragoons. I DON'T HAVE FOUR DRAGOONS. I also found an underwater treasure trove full of really nice gear that... you guessed it. Most of my party can't use.

asdf;lj. After I got the Viking job, I was going with a party makeup of 1 tank, 2 DPS, 1 healer, but I'm finding that there seems to be not much point in having a tank when most of the bosses hit the whole party with a spell, which hurts the Viking terribly because of low magic resist. I'm moving to a 2 DPS, 2 healer party (what I used to have way back when I was playing FF6), but... I'm running into the same old issue where now I have no recent armour that a Red Mage can use. And I went back and searched the entire accessible world, and nope. Nothing. So Refia is still going to be taking an assload of not just magical damage, but physical damage, too, now. BOO. If this doesn't work out, I'll go with 1 tank, 1 DPS, 2 healers :| Lord knows Arc does enough damage for everyone.

The game kind of flip-flops between really hard and really easy for me. Some bosses I've had to go back and level grind for because their randomness and random turn order doesn't help in me defeating them. But then other bosses I just steamroll. What I don't get is why they put a free heal/revive point in Doga's Mansion when... the dungeon isn't even long, the enemies are non-threatening, and there's no boss at the end of it. It doesn't feel like there's any point to it, unless Doga's Mansion is later used for a boss fight, idk.

Storyline wise, THERE SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF DYING IN SUCH A CUTE GAME (both... gameplay wise and plot wise). HOW DID THAT DYING GUY MANAGE TO CROSS THE OCEAN TO THE DWARVES' ISLAND ON THE FLOATING CONTINENT WITHOUT A BOAT ANYWAY?? OR EVEN WITH A BOAT, HOW?? I mean, there's nothing really special or attention grabbing about the plot so far (except for the fact that these 4 kids have survived not one, not two, but three airship crashes, now), but I guess I wasn't expecting much there in the first place. I'm quite happy with the cute but brutal game, and talking to my guest party members forever. I think that's actually my favourite part, since we get to see a little more personality out of the kids in those sequences outside of what is required by the plot.

Man, Luneth is such a derpface xD They're all... really cute sob. I'm not sure why I feel that way, especially about their FMV appearance. Maybe it's those legs? I DON'T KNOW. I. I GUESS I LIKE YOUNG HEROES (that don't annoy me)? I feel like such a pedo D:

I'm up to going into the underwater temple so I can... do something about time? Stop Xande from freezing time again or something? My current party makeup is:
Luneth - White Mage
Arc - Geomancer/Black Mage when needed (which isn't often now, when Arc's dealing 3k damage per turn?)
Refia - Red Mage, used to be a Viking.
Ingus - Dragoon, but considering switching him to a different physical class. Maybe Dark Knight, or a Ninja when I get it.

LOL Ex Death. I like that his primary method of getting around is humming and teleporting, but it leaves you so vulnerable! He seems to be entirely based around counter-attacking. You would have to have freakishly good timing to use him well.

FF3's job system kind of drives me mad - I like FF5's better, there was way less punishment. Lucky it's so cute. <3

I... I kind of wanted to ship Luneth and Ingus for a while too o__o (fortunately got over that, for much the same reasons you did). Must have been all the unresolved tension and rivalry. I have a weakness for that stuff.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he was designed that way. It'd be even harder to do it vs a real player because it seems that the only way to play versus in Dissidia is through the internet? And anything that requires precise timing kind of gets borked when you have to deal with lag.

I think I kind of went Everyone/Luneth at one point (mostly because one of the early conversations suggests Refia thought/thinks he's an idiot) before I was like, THIS IS JUST SILLY IT SHOULD BE EVERYONE/EVERYONE. Nepto Dragon/Enterprise. Fat Chocobo/Your stuff. Shopkeepers/My Money.

Another thing I noticed about ExDeath is...he also grinds really slowly.

ExDeath: destined to be slow forever.

Though I think he moves at a good speed when quickmoving.

FF3 pileeeeee

The only thing he's not slow at is counterattacking you in the face
