Okay this was actually going to be a holiday post (hooray I managed a trip to Malaysia without any incapacitating injuries/illnesses/other things for the first time!) about Malaysia and the adorable animals I've been spending time with but... I'm having issues with LJ Scrapbook and photobucket is still being really dumb for me.

Do any of you know how to 'fix' the error where, upon trying to upload to your LJ Scrapbook, you receive a message saying "You must be logged in to upload photos."? The funny thing is that I'm only logged out on that page; navigating elsewhere in LJ shows that I'm still logged in. Google has been less than helpful.

In the meantime, have a fanfiction meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] sinnatious to fill in the gap until I figure out a way to get lots of photos online (hopefully without having to get yet another account at an image uploading service).

1. How about a brief introduction of yourself?
I'm Ten, which was not short for Tentacle but somehow became that way.

2. Fabulous! And what got you into fan fiction to begin with?
I can't remember actually.

3. I see, so what kind of fan fiction do you like to write?
I'm primarily a drabble/short story kind of fanfic writer. I really like to write things that are So Bad It's Good, but I also like to write the heartbreaking and/or melancholic.

4. Do you tend to write the same pairings/characters? Or are you a fandom whore?
I tend to fixate on a single character and use other characters as something of a 'supporting cast' when needed, though I sometimes dabble in stories that focus on other characters.

5. What is your most popular fan fic and why do you think people like it so?
Hard to say given the nature of what I write and how I post it. But I've gotten a surprising amount of +favs on FFnet version of the short TWEWY/Devil Survivor crossover, He who dies lives forever, despite it being tucked away in the crossovers section and the two games having relatively medium-small fandoms. Like, according to FFnet's Story Stats, it has the fewest hits of all my stories, yet it has more +favs than any of my non-collection stories. That may be a little unfair, given that most of my 'good' stories have been put in a collection on FFnet, and that does affect the feedback I receive. No Dying Until the End (A TWEWY story that goes into Joshua's human, Player and Reaper past) is pretty close in popularity according to stats, anyway. Incidentally, as I'm browsing through the older stories I posted to LJ, I'm noticing I'm getting less feedback for my recent stories LJwise, despite them being better in my opinion. But I think that might be partly due to people moving on to other fandoms; the TWEWY comm is a lot less active than it was when I first joined.

For He who dies lives forever, I think it's mostly because I integrated two different canons that have a single point of commonality (Shibuya) in such a way that it seemed believable that they'd seamlessly take place in the same universe, when in most crossovers, there's this distinct aspect of being in another world. And to think I considered it a pretty much throwaway fic after I wrote it as an expansion of the Joshua/Naoya 1sentence fics I owed [livejournal.com profile] shimering2! As for No Dying Until the End, I think that might be because it's one of a smattering of stories that deal with Joshua's unknown past, and one of even fewer that go into further detail in regards to how he was when he was alive, when he was a Player, and when he was a Reaper.

6. Forget other people, what is the fan fiction you're most proud of?
I'm pretty pleased with how those two stories turned out, and I actually like a lot of what I write these days, too. I don't really have a single story I'm most proud of though, but here's some of the other stories I'm especially happy with:
  • [TST(TWEWY/MOTHER2)] Someday the dream will end. Joshua's reaction to losing the person closest to him, and how he deals with it.

  • [TST(TWEWY/MOTHER2/Bleach)] [nsfw and not safe for brain] Isshin/Joshua + Ness. A So Bad It's Good (in a horrible way) story where Joshua's not-father figure demonstrates (on Joshua) the finer points of foreplay to his partner.

  • [TWEWY] The irony of it all wasn't lost on him. When Joshua discovers the body of a Composer is immortal, he takes to dying like it's a hobby.

I'm sure you see a common point all these stories share.

7. Do you find writing easy? Hard? What are the most difficult aspects of writing you struggle with?
For short stories, writing is usually quite easy provided I have a clear idea of what I want to convey. For longer stories (which I don't really do), it's difficult due to everything about writing a longer story: plot, pacing, keeping up a similar level of quality as I do in short stories, generally having to write characters I'm less familiar with, that kind of stuff. Additionally, if I can't finish the story in one day, generally it doesn't turn out good... if I even complete it at all. The one semi-exception to this is No Dying Until the End, which was on the backburner for about a year before I finally scrapped it and started it over, finishing it in a night.

8. Write a few sentences about your favorite pairing or character.
I don't have a particular favourite character, despite the obvious Joshua bias when I write. But generally characters that make me laugh are the characters I like most given a cast of characters.

9. Are there any fan fiction cliches/trends that you can't stand or you're just sick of?
I don't really think this is restricted to just fanfiction, but I guess I'm tired of seeing so much sexual content (taken seriously) in fanfiction, and to a lesser extent, this fixation on romance. The former is mostly because when there's, say, a sex scene in a chaptered story, it tends to either derail whatever was happening earlier, or the writing style of the author changes completely, no joke. Regarding the latter, I usually find a lot of it is too dramatic, too hard to believe or made too big a fuss of. For both of them, the reason I kind of make such a big deal about all this is because romance and sex makes a HUGE portion of fanfiction out there and unfortunately for me, I'm just not interested in that! Additionally, a lot of the time, the writers don't have a sense of humour when they write them (they're pretty serious about it :c), which just makes an uninteresting thing even more uninteresting.

10. Are you guilty of any of the fan fiction cliche/trends? Or any other ones?
Done a vampire AU, done MPREG for srs (which I think [livejournal.com profile] meta topped me into, actually...), done MPREG for lulz, done [livejournal.com profile] weepingcock worthy porn for lulz (but then again, half the content is from there so I don't know if that counts...), done porn for srs (which I kind of regret; I didn't make it bad enough!). Haven't yet done a high school AU and I'm not about to start.

11. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Final Fantasy V, but that didn't last long. The first fandom I seriously wrote for was Ragnarok Online.

12. Name your OTPs or most frequently written pairings/characters and explain what it is about them you love to write.
Guess I'll talk about Joshua/Ness, and thus by extension, Joshua. For those who don't follow my RP exploits, in terms of personality, the main difference between the Joshua I RP and the Joshua in canon is the distinct lack of a "Shibuya" in Joshua's life + no godly powers and thus a (perceived) inability to change anything. This pairing for Joshua, has been mostly about him gaining a "Shibuya" and learning how to step away from that distant observer role he takes and learning how to step into an active participant role. Learning how to accept other people. Now, this isn't all from Ness, but he was the one who started the ball rolling. Also, being able to do stupid things like having Joshua suplexed by Ness' older brother and have him take care of his daughter a baby Pokémon and being bad at it. And having running jokes that Joshua is useless and a bad boyfriend and him getting cockblocked every time makes it way too fun.

Canon!Joshua I love writing because he's in that rather interesting position of straddling the line between an ordinary human and a deity of sorts. In addition to that, he has a direct hand in life and death in Shibuya. And finally, he's an exercise in extremes and things he is not. He is a god but at the same time, he is not. He has power over 'his' people but at the same time, he doesn't. There's a lot of duality and a lot that we don't know in his character and I love poking it around.

13. What would you call your "writing style"?
Thrifty on the description, generous with the emotion while leaning heavily on the fence of vagueness.

14. Do you read other people's fan fic? If so, what do you find yourself reading the most?
I don't most of the time, but sometimes I go on fanfic binges. I generally read shortfic these days because I'm often looking for an instant fix, and things that will be chaptered stories often end up incomplete (and that makes me ; A; when it's a good one). I usually look for something that I think will make me laugh, hit me emotionally and/or something that I find interesting conceptually. Funnily enough, I say this while madly wishing for some P3 and P4 multi-chapter stories to update.

15. Name ONE thing you'd love to write but have been too afraid or shy to do so.
I. AM. SHAMELESS. Actually, there is one thing that I want to write, but I'm wary of doing so because of the sensitive issues it deals with, but if I do, it won't be using a fanfiction format.

16. Do you have trouble taking criticism? Or worse yet, do you have the bloated ego?
I like to think I take the middle ground, but I haven't had any instances of criticism for a good few years now so I'm not entirely sure how I'd react to criticism (I'd probably be chill with it). I don't have a bloated e-cock that I use to slap other writers in the face with, but I'm confident enough in my abilities to know that most of what I write is, at the very least, decent. I still like having my feathers preened, though 8)

17. When you write, is there anything that helps? Music? Quiet room?
Depends on what I'm writing. A lot of my better works imo have been written do particularly mood inspiring music. Writing for me isn't just about words, but other things that colour it, images, sound, scents and touch. Since I draw as well, sometimes if the words aren't coming but the image is clear, I sketch what's in my head out so I can better put it into words. It's convenient.

18. What inspires you?
Lots of things. Music, other stories, conversations, stray thoughts, observation of the world around me. Art (and I don't just mean the purely visual kind) in general.

19. Lastly, how would you sum up your fan fiction experiences and yourself as a writer?
On the whole, very positive. I have a hard time creating my own things from scratch, so having someone else give me a framework has given me ways to express things that I wouldn't normally be able to. It's also helped in giving me a lot of self-confidence and a sense of actually meaning something, to be honest. However, the one thing about fanfiction is that fanfiction gives you something that original fiction doesn't (to the same extent): collective knowledge. I draw heavily on that collective knowledge when I write, so I skimp a LOT on descriptions. That might be fine for a fanfic writer, but if I ever want to write something that's not fanfic, I can't do that.

As a writer, I guess I'm usually either doing it for the lulz, doing it for the tears, or doing it for the mindscrew.
