NEVER AGAIN
MAN COLOURING IN PHOTOSHOP IS SO.
SO.
DIFFERENT.
Man I have a new found respect for people who colour like, a million different icons asdf;lk. Especially people who do it without a graphics tablet asdf;lkj I AM. considering removing the manga shading (as much as I hate to do it), since it seems to clash with my colouring :| BUT RIGHT NOW I CANNOT BE BOTHERED DOING THAT

A lot of the manga lines have been chucked through a filter several times on Photoshop. Basically, I duplicate the manga panel. Then on the top panel, Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. And then tick the Colorize box, and adjust the Hue and Saturation until I get the colour I want. Then on the same layer, I erase whatever part of the panel that I don't want to be coloured. Rinse and repeat for however many different coloured lines/tone I want. For Toto I generally did it about 3-4 times.
For the shading, I generally find that even when you gank colours off official art, the shadows aren't dark enough. So I put all my shading on a Multiply layer. I find it's pretty hard to get sharp shadows on Photoshop, but if you use a Multiply layer, you can use an eraser to get a sharp shadow, since eraser edges in Photoshop seem to be less blurry than the paintbrush.
And then 1 layer on top of all the lines for the highlights.
Granted it's a lot easier doing this if you've got a graphics tablet :|b

Having Multiply as a shading layer is kind of excellent, since if you're really lazy, you can use one colour for all your shading and still have it look good (http://tenshinoakuma.deviantart.com/art/Valiel-v2-35651492).
