I was supposed to write an Atsuro + Joshua essay, but tired brain meant that I just can't be bothered, especially given lol tests and lol RE252 :|
Talking to another Joshua player's made me realise just how much I still have yet to consider with Joshua's characterisation, more notable with canon!Joshua than with his TST!characcterisation (although some of the latter makes me ARGH at myself a bit, because I kind of shot myself in the foot from my laziness his family background etc.). Mostly in the history and culture of Japan, because, really, I don't know much about Japan. History is a big thing, because it's pretty clear historical things have an impact on how things pan out for countries, but I was never really big on history, and I guess living in my own bubble here in Australia makes me feel that history has far less of an impact on me as family and friends do. Big Things sometimes happen in the world, and I guess I feel unaffected because I'm living here in little ol' Australia, but the truth is, those things do affect us. And then there's the situational changes, the things that only really directly affect a particular region (which may culminate into bigger things).
I'd mentally put canon!Joshua at being somewhere around 19-25 years old (I can't remember the exact years because I lost the list of tables I made for the ages of the Reapers in TWEWY). I really ought to dig deeper into Japanese history, focusing on Shibuya, though others are still really needed because of lol context. Additionally, I kind of want to dig into culture and day to day family lifestyle, because I keep on equating Japanese family life to like, idk, Chinese family life (except that's not quite what I'm thinking), which is really dumb because Japanese != Chinese. I think the only thing I've read that covers topics I'm somewhat interested in is Gaijin smash, but as the name implies, it's not from the Japanese perspective and doesn't quite cover what I'm looking for. (Of course, what I'm even looking for is a bit hazy...). It's all very well for me to read "Japanese culture is blah blah blah", but I don't really get it until I've experienced it myself, which a pain in the ass. Maybe I'll (re)start learning Japanese.
Some notes relevant to the time period I headcanonly put Joshua as, as well as things relevent to Atsuro. Need to also get a better feel for the Composer before Joshua's characterisation.
I wonder why? about 50-60 years ago stuff changed because of the railways I think? Yoyogi Park was used in 1964 for the summer Olympics, around 40 years ago. I wonder if that changed anything? I could probably poke around Melbourne and/or Sydney to see how the Olympics affected them as well. I just had the greatest image of the Composers all over the world arguing over who gets to host the Olympics, though.
lol Bitter Valley. I wonder about that. I wonder if it's also supposed to be a mirror of America's Silicon Valley, as well.
Maybe it was because there's a certain being who camps in the river.
This is actually in Sendagaya, so I'm going to have to double check some of the locations. Also, have a look-see at the National Noh Theatre (and what. Noh actually is lulz. because I forget) and the International Theatre Institute. I don't know if these cover acting and/or dance, it's something I'll have to look into when I have more time.
uho? What historical importance? For that matter, Joshua seems to be pretty well read on Shibuya history (which makes sense, for all the people who put him at an older age, because the best teacher is experience). I really do want to keep him at a young age, because for my (main) headcanon (because MAN I have a lot of headcanon threads of possibilities for Joshua), I don't think becoming Composer is something that will artificially freeze your potential to grow and change. And I feel the title of Composer is something that changes hands on a relatively frequent basis.
Other Notes:
- the Meiji Jingu Shrine is used for Shinto weddings. So I wonder, do people visit it during shichi-go-san?
- Hurr, I've said that I put Joshua headcanonly at 19-25 years, which gives him about 4-10 years of being Composer, assuming he died at 15. I guess it's an okay range, given that I tend to characterise his behaviour in approximately canon's time as WHY WON'T SHIBUYA WORK, and at the time Joshua probably doesn't have enough experience to know that the Game doesn't work that way, boy, and is too arrogant? prideful? stubborn? to listen to Mr H.
- Crap. I also forgot where the Gundam was built. I am 100% sure at least ONE of the TWEWY cast would be all over that thing.
- Still have yet to flesh out more details of the game, especially the Reaper side of things, since the game gives a pretty good idea of what the Player side is like, even if it was a different from normal Game.
- NTS: Also pay more attention to the areas in DeSu
Also, there was someone on anon-talk who was like, dammit my characterisation now isn't as good as it used to be. And... I have kind of mixed feelings on that because I feel that way, but don't as well. Because right now, I feel my characterisation is wavering and not as good as it used to be, but then again, some of my earliest threads and posts were kind of terrible as well, since I couldn't really get into Joshua's head. And it's kiiind of frustrating, because I'm having the same trouble now as I did when I first started playing him. I can do all the movements and actions and trolling (though, I'm kind of :| at my trolling attempts right now), but his world view and thoughts? Yeah, I'm having a little more trouble there now than I used to a few(?) months ago. Maybe it's because of, that thing called Character Development ! It's kind of exciting and scary at the same time; I think I've kind of reached a point where I can no longer look at canon and use it as a quick and easy characterisation guide, because Joshua's already moved ON from what canon's shown. He's no longer in the same (mental) context as he was there and when I first started playing Joshua in TST ! I kind of think of this point as the reintegration of Joshua into society, even though it's an entirely inaccurate wording, it's that same kind of feeling, and it applies to both Joshuas. Anyway, what I should be looking at instead of twewy canon to get a better grip on Joshua's characterisation after his character development over the year, I think, are my past threads.
Also, having a lot of headcanons is really ARGH!!! /tableflip! inducing.
Edit: Huh, I never noticed there was an angel and a reaper in the Room of Reckoning.
... holy crap, that turned long.
Also, the fact I automatically start typing "/touch" to people I don't know very well is all your fault, chat.

Shibuya has achieved great popularity among young people in the last 30 years
I wonder why? about 50-60 years ago stuff changed because of the railways I think? Yoyogi Park was used in 1964 for the summer Olympics, around 40 years ago. I wonder if that changed anything? I could probably poke around Melbourne and/or Sydney to see how the Olympics affected them as well. During the late 1990s, Shibuya also became known as the center of the IT industry in Japan. It was often called "Bit Valley" in English, a pun on "Bitter Valley," the literal translation of "Shibuya."
lol Bitter Valley. I wonder about that. I wonder if it's also supposed to be a mirror of America's Silicon Valley, as well.
Shibuya Station Interesting Note
There is an underground river running under the station, to the east and parallel to the JR tracks. Unlike most other Japanese department stores, the east block of Tokyu department store (which constitute the east exit of the station) does not have retail space in the basement because of this. An escalator in the east block built over the river stops a few steps above floor level to make space for machinery underneath without digging. Rivers are deemed public space by Japanese law, so building over one is normally illegal. It is not clear why this was allowed when it was first built in 1933.
Maybe it was because there's a certain being who camps in the river.
Theatre
Sendagaya includes several theaters and organizations related to the arts, such as the National Noh Theatre (国立能楽堂), designed by Hiroshi Oe and completed in 1983. Also, the Kinokuniya Southern Theater, the classical music Tsuda Hall (津田ホール), the Japan Federation of Composers, the Japan Theatre Arts Association, the Japan Association of Music Enterprises, the Tokyo Nikikai Opera Foundation, a troupe of opera singers dedicated to promoting and developing the western music movement, and the Japanese Centre of the International Theatre Institute are located in Sendagaya.

Torii Gates in Hato Mori Hachiman Shrine
Shrines
A few minutes walk from the station, is the Hato Mori Hachiman Shrine (鳩森八幡神社), an oasis of calm with its 300-year old pine trees. Within the shrine, there is a stage for Japanese arts' performances and a replica of Mount Fuji. This small shrine is a place of historical importance in Shibuya.
