Hopefully, this is the last Castlevania related entry for a while. Sorry for the spam! Again, this entry will be split into two.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
I made a ridiculous amount of progress in this game in terms of sheer area coverage and shiny things gained, and since I didn't note them down yesterday, I've forgotten a large portion of it. The general gist of it is that I was being mercilessly slaughtered by the game, but at a certain point, suddenly everything became ridiculously easy.
Let's start with the 'getting slaughtered' bit. I spent a lot of time wandering around to figure out where I was supposed to go next. Eventually I ended up in the underground caverns, in which, more than ever, Alucard demonstrated his incredibly drowning skills by taking an assload of damage every time he touched water. But I thought I was doing pretty well; I hadn't taken all that much damage in the caverns and the enemies were easy to handle. Even the mini-boss fight against some snake thing was a total pushover. But, past that snake was a cavern with some pillars across it. Unsuspecting, I walked in... and the water started to rise. How convenient there were pillars, right?
... Except I fell off the second pillar, meaning Alucard was drowning. Jumping madly, I made it to the next room with 30 hp when I had begun with 200+. I thought this room would lead me to another room that contained something that would let me walk in water but no. It contained a BOSS FIGHT. BEING REALLY LOW ON HEALTH I panicked and was like jumping all over the place trying not to die while Alucard shoved his last potion down his throat. I managed to scrape a victory, clinging to a very low amount of health. Surely this would be the end of Alucard's drowning escapades, right?
Right?
Thoroughly disappointed by the fact the Scylla bossfight didn't give Alucard the ability to not drown, I continued onwards, grabbing the ability to summon the ferryman to take me though a waterfilled cavern to the real item that would let me through water without dying. So I got Alucard onto the boat, and thinking he'd be safe there, I zoned out for a second.
... In the one second, Alucard's head collided with the ceiling, knocking him into the water, where he proceeded to drown in a most spectacular fashion. Thinking the cavern wasn't that long and that I could catch up to the ferryman, I jumped after the ferry, always coming frustratingly close, but never quite on the boat. Alucard nearly made it to dry land... but died just before he made it. If he had 5 HP more, he would have still been alive.
I died a few more times as I tried to figure out where to go next, getting mercilessly slaughtered by enemies who were still doing 30+ damage a pop on me when I was doing a dinky little 5 damage on them, and could not avoid them. But that tale is somewhat boring and full of Ten!Rage.
I did a lot more exploring and backtracking, and from there, the game became a lot easier. I found decent armour (Holy armour) as well as good weapons (Holy rod, and some kind of flail, both of which have a much faster swing speed than the sword I was using, and has greater coverage). In fact, the reason the game became ridiculously easy was because all enemies were doing 1 damage to me, instead of ungodly amounts. Orlox, who by all rights should have slaughtered me, was doing 1 damage on me.
And so Ten cut a swathe through several bosses, including a three headed dog who apparently cannot aim at targets sitting at its feet and a huge ball of naked that spawns more naked and when you try to get rid of the naked, lasers you with a tentacle.
During all this, I also picked up a couple of familiars, who are all pretty cute, but the Bat is the cutest ;; So moe. When you transform into a bat, it will say '<3' and follow you closely, mimicking the actions you take. When you transform back, it'll be like '?'. Also, when it sees an enemy and attacks, it'll go '!' and then swoop. Its damage is kind of pathetic right now, but it tries hard ; A;9
I got up to Richter, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to damage him; everything I did to him was being guarded. Only my little batty was doing damage, which is kind of sad :c Later, I realised why; the weapon I was using was Holy property, which Richter isn't affected by. I swiftly killed him then, though I have to give him props for nearly killing me when he was dealing 1 damage every hit and I had just over 300HP. So, I got some kind of ending, but I was like WHAT THAT IS NOT THE END.
Turns out I needed the Holy Glasses, which I went to get. Aside from the ending I just got, there's two more ending paths I could take. One required me to kill Richter while wearing the Holy Glasses, and the second required me to hit the little green orb until it broke, which would progress the story to its next phase. Of course, I aimed to get the ending first, since I could progress the story after watching the ending.
So yeah, the aim was to kill Richter, not the green orb that flies wildly about. Richter moves fast and hurts so good, but he's also a bigger target.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Finished Soma mode in Dawn of Sorrow (all three Soma endings) in 12.5 hours (the same amount of time it took for me to get Best ending in Aria). I seriously can't remember much about my earlier escapades in Dawn, so I guess I'll skip over that. I'm faintly amused that while playing Symphony, I'm seeing a lot of similarities between Soma's sprites and Alucard's many sprites. It also amuses me that if you do a diagonal air kick with Soma, he'll twirl when he hits the ground.
Boring ending is boring, plot got interesting and most of the rest of what happened was me backtracking a lot to get secrets and such. Nothing too much of note here, aside from how cute Soma!bat is (it even looks like it's wearing his coat!). As people who hung out in chat know, endgame involved so much screaming. IT IS TERRIFYING HOW PAINFUL EVERYTHING IS ;; Final Boss was also no pushover (unlike Aria's).
Actually, I think the most interesting thing I did in Dawn was make Soma make out with questionable objects.
Also, I want to draw some AWESOME Castlevania art. The picture I have in mind? Soma and all the souls he obtains. I'll let you know when I start crying.

tenshinoakuma: NOOOO
tenshinoakuma: I MEANT TO KILL RICHTER NOT THE ORB
levikitty: LOL
levikitty: this is quite possibly the first time anyone has been upset about killing the orb
tenshinoakuma: :<
levikitty: Only you would fail at getting a worse ending
