I think just realising I was regurgitating canon helped a lot; it feels a lot more natural playing him now. Though I really hope I've got his behaviours right, since lol I've done so much wild mass guessing about him and there's so many possible theories and interpretations. Occasionally a character asks something about Toto and I'm mentally going, "UHHH YOU KNOW WHAT? I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE ANSWER IS." We haven't had any examples where Toto has given an evasive answer (more like tl;dr ~*mysterious*~ answers that make me want to punch him in the face), but he seems like the kind of person who'd only answer questions if he felt like it.
And RE: the curveball, yeahhh, and there's always the fact that RP is going to be an entirely different context from canon. Even if the situation is similar, there's going to be numerous small factors that'll influence how they react too. FOR EXAMPLE Toto's recently met a bunch of people who were artificially made into fightin' machines. I initially thought of his reaction to the Forgeries, but he actually likes these people because they're still (mostly) human-like in their behaviour, albeit skewed towards the crazy LET'S FIGHT side. And there's also the fact he's on a pirate ship instead of a prison xD
